All Keith ever put on his rods was furniture polish, Mr sheen/pledge. Doing this a couple of times a year is all you need along with the odd rap on the rod butt when it's raining.

I had one and landed barbel to a little over 15lb on it without to much trouble. It will be fine if you have some room but not if you need to stop them reaching snags.

Mark is spot on with his answer. Knowing where Dave is fishing it happens all the time on there. You will land the odd one if the hook finds the pectoral fin, but most just bump off.
