Curved shank hooks for Barbel.......

A bit of advice needed....

I've been sorting out my, frequently increasing, tackle over the weekend & came across a few packs of curved shank hooks. I know these are normally used for carp fishing but wondered if they'd be suitable for barbel fishing?

Also, what's the theory behind them? I'm assuming it's something to do with hooking the fish but not sure if it's specific to certain rigs etc?

I also do a bit of tench fishing & assume they would be suitable for that - they're size 10 & 12.

Thanks in advance.

Agree with Rhys, been using the Owner version for years but I bought a job lot and being a Yorkie I can't bear to change until I've used them all! :D

I use Korda curve shank hooks in a size 8 almost exclusively for all my barbel/carp fishing. Always a great hookhold and very rarely lose a hooked fish.

The curve angles the point of the hook more aggressively into the bottom lip and removes the need for any silicone sleeving or aligners around the knot.

I've also been using Fox 'Arma Point' curved shank hooks for the last four/five years for all of the above reasons.

Used them in the following patterns:
Nash Fang (Old pattern) - tough and tend not to blunt easily.
Nash Fang (New pattern) pretty much as above.

Fox SSC Arma point (Good, can suffer the odd point turn over but overall good hook and available in 10's.
ESP Raptor Curve Shanx (Very similar to the Fox)

Korda - my ones blunted easily, points turned over and one snapped on the bend resulting in lost fish. Binned them POP. (Pile of Pooh IMO)

All time favourite old pattern Fang - got loads.........and although one time available in 10's and 12's under the Fang Specialist label, tend to use 8's which can be a bit large. Use Fox Arma Point SSC if I want smaller.

maybe you had a dud batch ......

Never had one snap on me in the last 3/4 years of using them. And believe me I can find a sunken branch if there's one within 100 yards of my swim. :D

Luke,
It was when they first came out, but had similar happening on the wide gape version. Could have been duff batch but at £5 I didn't want to try them again.
