Changes to Rod License

Graham Elliott

Senior Member & Supporter
It's likely the following changes will take place.

A single payment covering 1-3 rods

Juniors under 16 FREE

Licenses to run for annual year.

It seems highly likely that current charges will reflect the cost of these changes.

Would be happy to pay more to support junior initiative..

Has there been any progress since this? Angling Trust and Environment Agency Launch Review of Multiple Rod Licence - The Angling Trust

It's certainly not going to change for April this year, I've just had my notice that my direct debit of £18 (pensioner rate) will be taken on/after March 1st.

Hope they make a better job of sending out the licences this year, I had to make 2 calls last year before finally being sent a 'replacement' as they messed up the issue and posting lists.

I couldn't agree more Graham.

Pay on line Steve, print off the permit, go fishing.

i get mine from a sub post office with no problems, pay em and walk out with proof of payment, get em back in a week

Its so annoying tbh. There's too many halfwits out there that cannot responsibly use 2 rods let alone 3. It just leaves it wide open for these people to fish 3 rods. I hope fisheries on rivers impose a 2 rod rule. Totally irresponsible by the EA and the AT, for the sake of another £27 it kept the irresponsible out of the equation.

Very elitist view John Frisby, I spend most of the season fishing for carp on a river (not eveyone has barbel blinkers) with 3 rods. If a tight swim warrents 2 rods or 1 rod then that is what I will use. If I'm barbel or chub fishing then just 1 rod will suffice as I prefer to hold the rod. Since the rule change allowing up to 4 rods, I have bought 2 licences, this initiative is the sensible way to go.

It will make no difference in terms of how many rods people use as that is determined by the clubs/owners, which is up to 4 rods, just because there is a change in license rules doesn't change club rules

jon it as simple as you say get river fisheries to rule 2 rods only, i was a serious carp man but only usually fished 2 rods unless for a very good reason, 2 rods maximum on rivers seem reasonable enough to me but if i do get out after carp in still waters i would want to use 3 rods on some

I didnt mean to come over elitist Steve. I just see quite a few of them on the Trent thats all. One chap i saw one day fished 3 rods on a section of the Trent that allows wster skiing. After being broken by water skiers 3 times that day, he still thought he was in the right. I could go on as I see bad angling quite often. Like you if i wanted to fish 3 rods i wpuld buy another license. My point was someone will just fish 3 rods because he can without thinking of a double or treble hook up and the ensueing consequences. In winter i may spread my 2 rods out, if i do i take a spare landing net to accommodate a double hook up.

Jon, obviously there are idiots in any branch of our sport, some of whom shouldn't be let loose with one rod! I have seen on the Thames the guy fishing with a pole or a float rod and has chucked a leger rod out to fish for itself (if you're lucky, he may use a buzzer) for either pike or carp, only to see it hurtle off into the depths, this sort of practice would still happen with a two rod limit on rivers as you suggest. Specialist anglers (across all species, not just carp) have been pushing for just this system for many years and at last the EA has listened.

I cannot for the life of me see how you can accuse John of holding an elitist view for stating that some folk can't handle two rods, let alone three....then follow up with a second post in which you state there are folk out there who shouldn't be let loose with one rod

Pot, kettle and black are words that come to mind...and all that stuff.

Cheers, Dave.

David, at no time do I claim an elitist view, far from it. Bad choice of phrasing perhaps. What I was trying to point out was that the 2 rod limit that Jon advocates wouldn't prevent the very situation he describes. It was more along the lines of clubs imposing a 2 rod rule on their fisheries which would severely affect my fishing in certain situations because of a lack of understanding. Also, I would mention on my travels on the river where I have seen anglers fishing in a manner which is perhaps unsafe, I have offered advice and tips, which in the vast majority of cases has been readily accepted.

Just had an email from the EA and any changes won't come into place until 2017. There is to be an increase in the licence fee for the first time in seven years but they haven't said by how much. As identified by Graham in the opening post, the following are to happen:

Proposed changes to rod licences in 2017
We’ve listened to your feedback on how we can make rod licences better. As a result, we’re proposing a more flexible licence for you that also allows us to continue improving fisheries.
Our proposals include licences which:

• run for a year from whenever you buy them

• give you the choice of a licence covering 3 rods as well as the standard 2-rod licence

• are free for junior anglers
So that we can continue to fund our fisheries work, we are also proposing to increase the licence fee for the first time in 7 years.
These changes are not due to happen until 2017 so current rod licence options and charges will apply until then. Look out for more details on our proposals in future newsletters and in the angling press when we advertise them this spring.

There really is no need to worry about how many rods you can use. According to a friend of mine who works in Leicester, he can obtain special concessionary rate rod licences. How does it work? Apparently, because he buys licences in bulk, he has buying power and hence can negotiate special rates. These licences are for infrequent use and hence are sold for £5 each. You have to make an undertaking not to go fishing too much or the licence might be invalid. My friend also said that these rods were multi-rod licences with no restrictions on the number rods you can use at any one time. I don't know how much a rod licence is these days as I have purchased these concessionary licences for the last few years. I don't see why he couldn't supply these to BFW members

''You have to make an undertaking not to not go fishing too much '' So how much is too much ?

Loving it Jim.... you do know how to get a bite in the coldest of weather..
