I really cannot believe what I have just seen on the t.v bob nudd is fishing the Severn and I could not believe what i have just witnessed a tv programme of a well known angler putting a barbel in a keepnet is that bloke for real???

Bear in mind that this is an old series too....

and anyway if you think that was not quite to your taste, wait till you see him catching barbel on a pole form a stillwater.....make sure you are sitting comfortably:rolleyes:

Better that than releasing them before they are fully recovered as many so called specialists do.

Provided keepnets are used properly they are not the work of the devil that some make out. I choose not to use them but don't particularly object to their use entirely. Presumeably, Bob Nudd is an experienced enough angler to know how to use one properly and safely.

It's an old episode, not that it really matters - he's a match angler ( a bloody good one by all accounts! ) - and match anglers put big fish in keepnets. Double figure barbel - in it goes, 20lb+ carp - in that goes too. I wouldn't go for a walk along the Severn or Trent during a big match if i was you Wayne - might not like what you see! ;)

Within topic does anyone remember the barbel tunnel? maybe 20 years ago now and think the same company did one for pike too.

I picked up an angling mail whilst on holiday and there was a feature on stillwater barbel, not my thing and obviously there was a few "glory shots" of the "haul" from the commercial fishery, one shot had him holding three fish head on to the camera.

I take your points about using nets, match fishing is great and I don't disagree with keep nets at all cos what a fantastic feeling you get when your pulling a keep net out that's got some weight in it perhaps it's just when Iv been to the tidal Trent for instance and there's nothing but dead barbel on the rocks/bank what have been starved of oxygen you can surely see my point? These badly treated fish will never be caught again. yeah bob nudd is a great match fisherman one of the best if not the best. But it irritates me to see it. any fish be it barbel chub etc on a river once caught will always need some recovering time but most river match venues when barbel are caught they get weighed and released. I'm astonished that nobody can see where I'm coming from or is it just me seeing the wrong thing at the wrong times???

Perhaps, but I can honestly say that the only dead barbel I've ever seen have been firmly down to barbel anglers that have failed to allow enough time for a fish to recover fully before releasing them.

I understand where you are coming from. I just believe that you've got a little caught up in the anti-keepnet propaganda which presumes to treat everyone as complete idiots.

I'm not saying people are complete idiots that use nets mate. Its opened an all new light to me this post because Iv always believed barbel are not a fish to keep in nets and obviously with what Iv seen and read it's hard for me to accept barbel in a k/net. But when I do my barbel fishing I just try to return the fish as quick and as safely as I can they do need a lot of recovery time and when fishing small rivers and shallow swims I will always realease them in the most oxygenated deep pools just holding the fish in the current and with a slow back and forward action until the fish is ready to swim off which Iv always found to be the correct way?

The main problem with using the keepnets was that the large dorsal spike on the back would get caught in the mesh and damage it or it would get tangled with it, correct pegging out and using the new micromeshes have decreased the problem, but I cant say there are all that many matches on rivers any more, not like in its hay day when 100 peggers were the norm, anything if used correctly will narrow the chances of mishapps.:D

Nowhere did I suggest that you were saying anyone was a complete idiot.;)

As I said, you've got yourself well and truly caught up in the anti-keepnet propaganda that has been quite prevalent for the last few years. It's that propaganda which presumes that everyone is an idiot. It caters for the lowest common denominator.

P.S. I'm not a keepnet user myself, just don't see why so many folks think that they are the work of the devil.

Fantastic post opened my mind up to the barbecue in the net River fishing in general isn't nowhere near like it used to be it's turned in to big barbel fishing on all rivers now which I think is fantastic but it also takes the appreciation away from the other great fish to be caught such as good sized chub perch bream etc.

Subject: Existential Crises

Might be of use to you touchy-feely Beauty Care chaps, that, whenever I see (or even so much as suspect) Cruelty to A Barbel, I go out and kill - well, at least, demand the long and lingering death of anybody and everything non-human that might have caused it (particularly an otter). Makes me feel a'wight, yer know. Probably does / will do the same for you, too.

As ever,

B.B.
