Another one bites the dust.

AND.... Be Lucky Angling in Cheltenham has gone / going, no Angling shops in Cheltenham now, nearest is Blank-side  OR our very own Rob Danter of Tewkesbury:)

What with the recession, high street business rates/rents, internet shopping and a general decline in anglers, Neil has called it a day.

Gutted for him.

Amersham Angling Centre, Fishing Tackle, Bucks, Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Hertfordshire

I know Dave, I have been expecting it for a long time, and was in the shop chatting to him and his wife and father yesterday. He 'phoned me a week or so back to let me know...and despite it being no surprise, I was still gutted for him.

Where will it all end? I know John at Harefield is still there, but to my knowledge, eight angling shops have gone in a 15 mile radius to me in the last few years...NOT good...especially for the poor souls whose source of income has just come to an end. The internet has a lot to answer for

Cheers, Dave.

As Neil has stated my local tackle shop in Cheltenham is closing . Which was only ten minutes drive away from where I live .
I was chatting to the owners the other week and they were telling me . First there rent was going up and secondly they cant compete with the internet prices .

Over the years I have got to know them and they know me and in the past if I have had any problems with any thing I have bought from them .
They have allways replaced or given me a refund with no questions asked .
I now have a round trip of about 20 miles to my not so local tackle shop if I need any bits and pieces .

The moral of the tale is this .

Use it or loose it . When its gone its gone and you may end up traveling a lot further than you wish to
It may be cheaper buying from the internet in the short term and it could end up costing you more in the long term . When you local tackle shop closes and you have to travel further for your bag of boiles or pellets or pack of hooks etc etc

So name the 8 dave G.
Amersham, chiltern tackle, Tudor tackle, specialist angling tackle?

Absolutely! I always use my local! Same thing applies to pubs!

Can't remember the names Dave....short term memory loss has left me struggling for my own name at times :D There have been THREE come and gone in Money Hill parade in Rickmansworth alone over the last ten years, at least two in Hemel, three in my town of Chesham, at least one in Watford, two in H.Wycombe....that's just off the top of my head. Neil tells me there is another biggie gone or going not too far away, but can't remember the name of that either :D:D

Cheers, Dave.

Justin I have used lobbys in the past and as you say they give good service :)

I remember many years ago I bought a 14.5 mtr pole from Lobbys and it was my first and only pole I have ever bought . Told the guy in the shop I had never used one before and to my amazement he took me and the pole and a seat box to the local village green just yards away from the shop and set it all up for me so I could try it and feel what it was like .
He explained the right way to hold a pole when fishing and I bought it .
As you say Justin better service than you get of the internet .

So what are we going to do, order everything online including a pint of maggot.

That bait shop lasted about 5 minutes.

Having researched online for a new landing net and handle I rang my local tackle shop to check for stock and a price. They were £5 cheaper than I could find anywhere online.

We lost most of our local tackle shops in the Newbury area a little while ago and it looked as though it was the Internet or nothing. Then about a year ago, "Experience Fishing" opened up. A big warehouse with an abundance of stuff, serious fishing stuff. It seemed a bit bizarre someone looking to reverse the trend but I am glad they did. The range of gear they sell combined with a very knowledgeable and helpful team is key I think. But critically, on price, they aim to price match. I have bought a few pricy things from them and at the counter we have carried out a quick Internet search and whatever looks like being the lowest price, that's what I have paid. On consumables, I suspect I could get cheaper on-line but I am a firm believe in patronising local businesses. If I need bait or gear at short notice its great knowing they are less than 10 mins away. So I really hope they survive.

Yep Lobby's are excellent, but a good drive, and down the M5 Justin to be pedantic :)

Bankside do maggots Joe, and of course Rob's.

Dave H, exactly, where are we going to get a pint of maggots?

I'm ok, Harefield is not too far, but some local pensioner with limited transport is stuffed.

I've always made a point of buying local, the cost of internet delivery and hassle of arranging collection was not for me.
Then there was the club info and tickets.
And not forgetting the general chit chat.
And the aftersales service.

Probably, in the end, a great relief for Neil, it was taking a toll on him and his family, John had undergone three heart bypasses.

Neil was my old drinking buddy in C St P from way back when, and we even played in a band together in Germany.
The tackle business is all he's ever known.

Sad day
