Hook Pattern

Now here is a thought. Do Pallatrax or ESP Raptors hooks actually have an equivalent sized hook to a Kamasan Animal size 16?

And I can tell you for a fact Korum S3's certainly don't go that small, on the basis that a Korum S3 size 18 hook is exactly the same size as a Drennan Carbon Feeder size 12 (whose dimensions are a close match to the Kamasan Animal's). You'd need to find an S3 size 22 to replicate your old hook dimensions.

Clever marketing I'd say, don't improve a hook's relative strength, just alter the size marked on the packet, soon we'll be using size 5/0 O'Shaugnessy's marked up as size 4 carp hooks.:D:D

fair comment Jim, it doesnt take much to hide a size 12 inbetween 2 or 3 maggots, then again it all depends which size 12 you do use.

Surely, horses for courses. I would use 14s and 16s for roach fishing, not holding barbel in snaggy swims.

It's not a question of "holding barbel in snaggy swims", it's down to what you have to present and how.

Sometimes a single maggot is the only bait to work.

Ive found the Drennan Barbel speciallists to be no good due to the hook blunting when fishing over gravel..Ive been using fox ssbp in sizes 8,9 & 10 and cant fault them in any way and are a very strong hook..Ive found that the ESP hooks are not as sharp as the Fox hooks..The fox hooks stay sharp even after several fish captures..

I think i have said this before but i cant find a better small maggot hook than Mustad long point specialist. Has anybody else tried these honks?

Actually been using the Pallatrax hooks since July (tried them as an alternative to my beloved old pattern fangs) and found them good so far. Been using them mostly in 8, 12 and 14 sizes.
Strong hook.
Cheers
Bob

Jon,

Yes, I use the Mustad Eyed Specialist Long Points when a small strong hook is required. Not exclusively, as obviously, no single hook pattern will suit every situation or bait presentation. But find them VERY strong for their gauge and size, and as you mentioned, very cheap. Tend to use them in sizes from 10's down - as in - smaller.

Also like the Pallatrax (The Hook) in smaller sizes too. But much more expensive and imo the Mustad is it's equal in strength for a fraction of the price.

Daz.

Having looked at the Keith Speers 15lb 6oz fish on the home page picture . I think it answers a lot of peoples question as to which hook you should use .
A Drennan specialist size 16 . If ever proof was needed , Then I think the photo say's it all :)

Probably okay for barbel but those long points are rubbish for tench as they keep falling out. Those barbed Kamasan animal hooks are a very good for staying in grayling, they're the best grayling hook I've found so far anyway. Lets face it hook and hold barbel fishing with anything smaller than a strong size 8 is likely to have regular shortcomings.

Maybe worth a look at the Korum S3s in smaller sizes, they've been reliable for me in smaller sizes caster fishing and save for the odd hook pull they've been strong and reliable and even landed a 30lb carp on a size 12 whilst bream fishing and to be honest, I really gave that fish some welly.

Spot on - the barb on the long points is far to far from the point, in effect making it barbless. If they moved the barb towards the point and kept everything else the same it would be a cracking hook for tench.

I've used them loads when tenching, certainly never experienced any problems to give me any concerns re the hook pattern?

Come to think of it, I've never really found tench to fall off any hook very often for that matter?

Maybe I'm just lucky, always better to be lucky than good - as they say! :D

Hi Guys, i`ve been using Kamasan specimen and Animal hooks in size 16 for my Barbel and Chub fishing when using maggots or casters as hook bait.

The problem i`m having is the hooks tend to open up and i`m dropping good fish.

Can anyone recommend a good eyed hook pattern in size 16.

Very often a hook will open out because it has never penetrated properly in the first place and the mechanics of the hook hold are all wrong, This is difficult to describe but easy to illustrate, if you hold one end of a hooklength and rest the hook point against a table edge or similar and pull the hook will have a tendency to open slightly and pull free, if however you hook something down onto the bend of the hook, a keyring for example, and then pull you are more likely to break the hooklength than open the hook.

The main reasons for hooks not penetrating is because the point is folded over, this happens far more often than you might think, especially when fishing over gravel, but don't take my word for it, buy a cheap x10 jewellers loupe off ebay and check for yourself, if you solve that problem I think you will solve the problem of hooks opening up and dropped fish which you thought were well hooked.

Another sign of a blunt hook is one which bursts the maggots when you try to hook them, just change the hook, modern hooks in smaller sizes are all acid sharpened and case hardened and impossible to sharpen without going through to the soft unhardened steel which wont hold an edge..

The trouble with being lucky is that you can't be lucky all the time.

Re, tench and 'Long Point Hooks' I can't speak for the larger sizes as I've not used them. I did use the 14s and 12's for maggot feeder fishing though, and had no end of trouble with them falling out. Mind you my recent history with smaller hooks and big tench is not something to be mega happy about.
