New reels and rod tips

I would like to echo Dave Taylor's words of wisdom - don't try to run before you can walk. Enjoy the fun of the learning curve!

the OP seems a pretty level headed chap, who is already a accomplished angler I would gather. Trouble is that learning curve is littered with some pretty bad purchases along the way, we all know that.

I wish I had some wise old so and so's to ask a few years back.:)

I wouldn't go as far to as to use words like 'level headed' and 'accomplished' .....haha, i've made some rather rushed gear purchases in the past (ain't we all?) and been on the waterside with a rod in my hand since i was 6 years old and even worked in the tackle trade straight from school (although hasn't helped my catch rate!)

Well, i have gone with the Drennan 1.75 barbel, lovely rod and much more suited to the rivers i will be fishing despite my initial thoughts of using a heavier feeder rod, and hopefully some double figure fish rather than the smaller ones =)

Thanks for all the input guys, really appreciated =)

Good choice on the rod Mark, rather proves my assessment of you.:) I was in two minds in offering you my Drennan specialist Barbel rod, unused and in a case, with tickets. But didn't want to appear pushy.
Now for the hard bit, go get a bend in it.

Just thought i'd pop back and let you know the combo i went with:

Drennan Martin Bowler 1.75 barbel and a Shimano baitrunner 4000 ST

I don't know much about the current Baitrunner range or what all the different letters mean, but it seems a nice reel, nice size on the rod, and i could get 2 for almost the price of 1 Daiwa Whisker 2600

Just need to Christen it now with a nice chub or barbel before the end of the season.

Good luck Mark, and let us know how it turns out. :)

I've got the 4000 baby baitrunner and the SS2600, love them both.

I view them like a car, the SS2600 is like an old 1.9 vw/pug diesel van that is a bit rough and agricultural but is robust and rarely lets you down.

The Shimano is all singing and dancing with nice add ons and is a joy to use but you know you just can't mistreat it.

If I chose just one it would be the Daiwa

I still think i may pick up the Daiwa, just cause i love the look of them. But, 1600 or 2600 size though?

How much larger is the 2600 vs baitrunner?

a fair bit larger on capacity mate, you can also get carbotex washers so you can convert it quite easily to a quick drag type bait runner, personally the 2600s suit me fine and leave me a bit confident in them.:)

Cool cheers man, i didn't want something really big pit carp sized, but i've seen pics of them on the Nash Dwarf rods and they didn't look too big. I'd be using one of them on my Drennan barbel rod and also the Dwarfs too for when i do a little day ticket carping and from what i've seen they look fine.

I've seen the carbon washers from the USA on Ebay, are those the ones you mean?

just type in carbotex under fishing on ebay, or ring roy on 07795 557435, a great guy knowledgeable and a good angler himself, if you have to leave answer on voicemail its ok providing you speak clear and le him know exactly what reel ect and when he rings back he will talk youthru the way to do it too but hes busy during aytime as hes a full time baliff:)

I used the Daiwa 2600 reel since start of the season and I rate them very highly. I've been giving them a lot of stick on the lower Severn and been first class. Look on the carp pages on face book pages you can sometimes pick them up cheap
