I have the Wychwood folding spoon (larger salmon one), the mesh depth is a little shallower than I would like but I haven't had any issues with Barbel up to 13lb in it with regards to resting, use it for everything other than pike and carp.
Another niggle is the pin has a tendency to fall out...

I have one and use it for pretty much everything apart from trotting, landed barbel to over 15lb on it with no issues - its the older model and doesnt suffer the issues that the new models supossedly have.

I have a thought regarding the disscussion for water quality causing fertilisation issues in barbel.
If spawning fish are taken from the river (in the case of barbel) to a fish farm (calverton?) and stripped and reared the success rate is very high. Obviously this ignores the wild spawning...
